Located off the South Coast of Ireland, the Inis Ealga Marine Energy Park project will utilise Floating Offshore Wind (FOW) technology and upon completion, will have the potential capacity of up to 1 GW.
An Application for Foreshore Licence was submitted to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (DoHLGH) in October 2019. The application reference number is FS006859. The purpose of this is to seek permission to investigate the area.
-
The red boundary in Figure 1.1 is the Foreshore Licence Area and is the area under investigation for potential cable routes to shore.
-
The grey boundary Figure 1.1 is the Turbine Investigation Area and is the area under investigation as the location for the wind farm itself.
The areas under investigation are substantially larger than the area that will be required for the actual wind farm itself.
Specifications
Project Size
The project is expected to have a capacity of approx. 1,000MW (1 GW). However, until the surveys and studies are complete, this figure is indicative only.
Technology
The project will use floating wind technology which involves turbines mounted on a floating structure connected to the seabed by mooring lines.
Turbine Numbers
Turbine numbers depend on individual turbine size. Based on current technology at 15MW, a 1 GW wind farm would likely comprise of approx. 70 turbines.
